The BAM Doctoral symposium is our flagship event for doctoral students, and is one of most established & high-profile events in the community.

The 2012 Doctoral Symposium will be held at Cardiff University on 10th-11th September 2012. Due to changes to the format of the main conference, symposium sessions will begin on the Monday afternoon, followed by dinner. The final sessions will resume on Tuesday the 11th. (see programme below for more information)

The symposium will comprise plenary sessions along with methodology clinics, as well as Research Conversations led by senior academics from within the community (aimed at 2nd year students) and paper presentation sessions (aimed at 3rd years). Paper Submission Details

The BAM2012 Doctoral Symposium paper submission is officially open!

The BAM Doctoral symposium is intended to be interactive and to provide opportunities to engage with experienced researchers.

For PhD researchers in the second, third and fourth year, one of the best ways to do this is to present some of your work and get feedback.

Who should submit

  • 1st years are not expected to submit, although are not excluded.
  • 2nd years to submit an outline paper for a Research Conversation.
  • 3rd years to submit to either the research conversations or to  developmental paper presentations, depending on progression of your paper.
  • 4th + years to submit a developmental paper for presentation.

2nd and 3rd Years - Research Conversations

The research conversations are roundtable discussions of students' research with senior academics in their field. Round tables will have 3 or 4 PhD students and each will present verbally a short outline paper for about 5 minutes, following which there will be a research conversation aimed at helping the student take the next step in their research.

Read the full format and guidelines here

3rd and 4th Years - Developmental paper presentations (New for 2012)

Developmental paper presentations will be conducted in small groups including an experienced academic. Developmental papers are normally expected to have both theory and empirical material but are not expected to have fully developed analysis and conclusion. You will be asked to present for about 10 minutes and then engage in a question and answer session with the audience.

Read the full format and guidelines here

How to submit

Email your completed paper before Sunday 17th June 2012 to jcampbell@bam.ac.uk. Please don't forget to indicate if you are submitting to the research conversations or to the paper presentation sessions - you can't submit to both.
