Impactful Academics? - Problematising ‘Impact’

What does it mean to be an ‘impactful academic’ as an individual or as a business or management school? What academic activity is excluded in the current REF impact process and what would we change for the future?

As ‘impactful academics’ we (as individuals and management schools) have an impact at the nexus of research and teaching. But how do we understand and articulate that and to what extent is it visible and valued within the current REF process? This workshop is an opportunity to explore these questions.

Format:

Interactive sessions to enable participants to exchange experiences and ideas on the following themes:

  1. Ontology and Epistemology of Impact - Paul Ellwood, Clare Rigg University of Liverpool

What assumptions of the nature of knowledge permeate the REF Impact case process?  To what extent is the impact field still dominated by hard science assumptions of knowledge and knowledge transfer in which research knowledge is conceived as an entity, commodified into a tool or technique that can be passed like a relay baton from producer to user?

  1. Gender and Impact – Emily Yarrow, University of Portsmouth and Julie Davies, Manchester Metropolitan University

An analysis of 395 2014 REF impact cases for business and management studies with an identifiable lead author revealed that only 25 per cent were led by women, of which 54 per cent were sole authored. But what about its potential effects on female academics? How can we understand invisible and socially constructed gendering within UK policy designed to evaluate research impact?

  1. Pedagogical Impact

Although REF 2021 stretches to consider pedagogical impact, how is this being interpreted and what does it mean to realise impact of teaching?

  1. Shaping the Future of Impact
  • What changes would we like to see?
  • How can we influence ‘Impact’ case policy in the future?

This event will be of particular interest to those colleagues preparing an Impact Case either for the current Ref or the next. It will also be relevant for those involved in framing REF Impact Case guidelines and evaluation post 2021.
