The main objective of this year’s conference is to explore the developments of HRM in Small & Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The attraction, motivation and development of employees have long been recognized as important challenges that SMEs face. However, there is still limited conceptual and empirical research on HRM in SMEs (Festing et al, 2013; Psychogios, et al, 2016). Often HRM that developed within large firms are applied uncritically within SMEs (Heneman, et al, 2000) neglecting that SMEs are different with regards to their institutional, resource and economic contexts (Krishnan, & Scullion, 2017). So, there is still only limited empirical research on how HRM is practiced in SMEs in general (Massey and Campbell, 2013; Messersmith and Wales, 2013; Parker and Verreynne, 2013) and especially those operating in turbulent economies (Teague & Roche, 2014; Prouska, et al, 2016).
In this respect, the conference will seek to increase understanding of the nature of strategic HR, working conditions and talent management in SMEs. It will explore the key characteristics of SMEs that influence strategic HRM. The way that SMEs deal with HRM in different contexts will be also examined. Moreover, working conditions in SMEs will be investigated. Arguably, economic downturn has dramatically worsened business conditions and forced many SMEs to become hostile working places (Roche et al, 2011) and lead towards adverse working conditions (Psychogios, et al, 2017). The conference will seek to explore SME employees and managers’ engagement in re-formulating working conditions as well as the role of HR in managing working conditions in various post-crisis contexts. Finally, the conference will aim to critically examine the applicability of large firm talent management approaches and practices to the SME sector.
