Understanding the impact of turbulence through international HRM research: Lessons for HRM theory and practice

Description

The objective of this workshop is to support a Special Issue proposal to a leading academic journal. The workshop will explore the impact of ‘turbulence’ on employees, organisations and HRM, drawing on international HRM research. ‘Turbulence’ has a different meaning in varying contexts and, as a result, has diverse implications for HRM theory and practice. A prominent type of turbulence that has dominated the literature in recent years has been the global financial crisis. The workshop aims to explore contexts that are still under economic crisis, where organisations are exposed to organisational restructuring and where employees experience the effects of adverse working conditions (Psychogios, Nyfoudi, Theodorakopoulos, Szamosi & Prouska, 2017), such as effects on working hours, job insecurity and stress, employee voice, pay/benefits, training/development, motivation, productivity, loyalty, the psychological contract and physical/mental health (e.g. Chatrakul Na Ayudhya, Prouska & Beauregard, 2017; Prouska & Psychogios, 2018). Other political and social ‘turbulence’, such as ‘Brexit’ in the UK and ‘America First’ in the US, means that there is change occurring in industrialised countries that are now making significant changes to their immigration policies sending negative signals to the skilled, multi-cultural, workforce (Horak, Farndale, Brannen & Collings, 2017). ‘Turbulence’, therefore, invites investigation from a number of angles - economical, socio-political, employment relations, sociological and psychological among others. At the centre of this investigation are the employee experience of these trends, the impact on organisations and the lessons for HRM theory and practice. Posters are to be devoted to research-in-progress and project presentations. Abstracts of 200/250 words should be sent to prouskar@lsbu.ac.uk by 9th December 2019 10:00 (UK time) and will be reviewed by the Academic Programme Committee.

Walk or bicycle
The University is in easy walking distance of underground and leading overground stations, and only 20 minutes away from the Thames.

By bus
A large number of buses travel to and connect in the Elephant and Castle area from across London.

By train or tube
The Bakerloo and Northern lines stop at Elephant & Castle underground station, which is right next to campus. The closest rail stations are Elephant & Castle, London Waterloo and London Bridge.

By car
The University does not provide public parking space. There is a limited amount of parking in the area, so we strongly advise using public transport. Do consider the Congestion Charge if you are driving through London to reach the campus.
