18th European Academic Conference on Internal Audit and Corporate Governance

It has become clear from recent events that new and potentially serious threats to the governance of enterprises have emerged. These threats can be categorised into three key themes:

• Dysfunctional and inadequate boards
• Ineffective supervision of major financial institutions by national and international regulators
• A growing loss of confidence in the role of external auditors

These threats have created a situation where senior management might lose trust in the ability of regulators to assure that financial services are properly supervised, lose their traditional sources of corporate governance and audit support and advice and most of all find that there is no alternative source of assurance and support when identifying and managing strategic risks.

Research presented over the history of this conference has repeatedly shown that senior managers (in particular independent and audit committee members) welcome the support and advice of their internal audit functions regarding internal control issues.

For the 2020 conference we especially invite authors to address what senior management need to do in order to enhance corporate governance and what internal auditors can do to provide advice and support at board level. We especially encourage papers in the following areas:

• The role of the internal audit function in providing advice and support to the board
• The relationship (potential and actual) between internal auditors and audit committees
• How enterprises are affected by changing financial regulation
• How internal auditors and other corporate governance players can contribute to reputational and integrity issues

We will of course also welcome papers for review that address any relevant aspect of internal auditing and corporate governance.
