BAM SIG: Performance Management and Measurement in Entrepreneurial and Family Businesses

___________________________________________________________________________

Description

There is an old management caveat that advocates “if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it”. Whilst this quote is attributed to Peter Drucker, who is recognized as the man who invented modern business management and is renowned as one of the greatest management thinkers of all time and has 39 books on the subject, there is much debate as to whether the quote is attributable to him (Zak, 2013). Notwithstanding this, there still appears to be a lack of theory that underpins performance measurement systems and how best to manage performance. This is further compounded by the advances of modern technology and the proliferation of the use of performance measures to assist in performance management.

The performance drivers of family businesses have further spawned considerable research interest (Hughes et al., 2017). The purpose of this event is to explore, share and update our understanding of performance measurement and management in the context of entrepreneurial and family business. The focus is to understand how the changing landscape of businesses has required researchers and academics to re-think the measurements for performance management used. Furthermore, the discussions will allow participants to explore what challenges face entrepreneurial and family businesses.
