2017 Directors Report

Becoming an Education-Focussed Professor

The BAM Management Knowledge and Education (MKE) initiative supports the development of high quality and impactful learning and teaching in business schools. From its inception four years ago, the MKE project has focused on capacity building around the scholarship of learning and teaching, launched an Education Practice award, offered research grants, and held its first Learning and Teaching Practice conference.

In 2019, we will launch a new project: ‘Becoming an Education-focussed Professor’ aimed specifically at supporting and developing business school academics on a Teaching and Scholarship track.

The goals of the Becoming an Education-Focussed Professor MKE project are:

  1. To define education-focussed scholarship in a way that becomes useable, accessible and open to assessment, building on the Boyer/Carnegie fundamentals that it should be delivered externally and open to peer review.
  2. To promote the centrality of the scholarship of teaching and learning in business schools and to achieve parity for teaching and scholarship (T&S) academics with research focused academics in consideration of promotion decisions. We propose that the scholarship of teaching and learning and conventional basic research (the scholarship of discovery) should be valued equally in terms of the status, recognition and reward for success.
  3. To explore and establish the relevance of other forms of scholarship for T&S academics. This may include (to some extent and with particular focus) the scholarship of discovery (conventional research), along with the scholarship of integration and the scholarship of application.
  4. To provide a programme of development for BAM members who wish to understand the nature and modalities of scholarship and develop their own scholarship profile.

The development programme will be launched at an event at Warwick Business School at the Shard, London on 28 January 2019. We hope that you and T&S colleagues from your School will be able to join us, the programme for the day is attached.  Details of the four workshops to be held in 2019 will be available at the beginning of December, they will cover the following areas:

  • Pedagogical Research and Sharing your Work (Manchester)
  • Applied Research and Creating a Publication Profile Based on Actionable Knowledge (Belfast)
