Gender in Management Special Interest Group Event Report – Conference to Honour Professor Ruth Simpson

5th July 2017

Researchers from around the globe joined the BAM GiM SiG on 14th June 2017 at the Roehampton Business School, University of Roehampton to honour Professor Ruth Simpson and the significant contributions she has made to gender in management and organization studies.

The conference brought together scholars across disciplines and networks from Nigeria, Dubai, Australia and the UK, including PhD students beginning their research careers. We heard presentations about researching with Ruth as PhD students and as co-researchers in the areas of the gendered MBA and management education, theorizing visibility and invisibility, men and masculinity, the feminization of management, dirty work and the glass slipper and merit for women’s careers. We celebrated various aspects of Professor Simpson’s research, spanning over twenty years, interspersed with personal stories of the joy of working with Ruth. We identified many avenues for future research.

Ruth’s contribution for supporting and developing the academic careers of others was a critical and valued ‘golden thread’ running throughout, illustrating how leading Professors can not only develop diverse, unique fields of study but successfully combine this with business school management roles and importantly with capacity building for the future of management and organization studies. Ruth continues to publish research and is regularly invited to present on the craft of writing for publication.

Professor Ruth Simpson’s legacy to date is found in numerous doctoral thesis and publications and her personal ‘mark’ is reflected by those who have progressed with her support as Dr.s, Readers and Professors around the world. The conference closed by celebrating Ruth Simpson - an important and valuable founding Professor of gender in management and organizations.
