A call for business schools to ‘lower their walls’ to address societal challenges: The value of business school research to improve youth mental health.


In order to retain their legitimacy with external stakeholders, business schools must address ‘grand’ challenges faced by society. This symposium highlights the contribution business school research can make towards the challenge of developing and delivering effective healthcare, focused upon mental health care and well-being amongst young people.

The symposium brings together the Chief Executive of a Partnership NHS Trust (Simon Gilby, Coventry & Warks Partnership Trust), a Deputy Head of Mental Health and Children and Young People’s Mental Health Programme Lead (Kathryn Pugh, MBE, NHS England) and two business school professors with expertise in the development and delivery of health care (Professor Paula Hyde, Manchester Business School & Professor Eivor Oborn, Warwick Business School). The symposium will be introduced and chaired by the Pro-Dean Research, Warwick Business School, who also has expertise in health care development and delivery (Professor Graeme Currie).

Graeme Currie will issue a call to arms for business school faculty to address the societal challenge of improving youth mental health care provision. Following which Simon Gilby and Kathryn Pugh will set out the organizational and clinical challenges they face in delivering more effective and efficient youth mental health provision. Paula Hyde and Eivor Oborn will then respond to these challenges setting out how studies led by business school researchers provide lessons for those in policy and practice. Finally, Graeme Currie will chair discussion amongst the symposium presenters, drawing upon questions and comments from the BAM audience.

The symposium will interest researchers in healthcare organization and management, as well as those concerned that business schools produce social value. The most relevant dimensions of healthcare organization and management for research will be identified by senior managerial and clinical practitioners. Meanwhile, business school academics will consider how these dimensions might best be theorized and researched. The aim is for researchers to leave with a better understanding of how they might go about their research to address societal challenges, specifically the organization and management of youth mental health for which there are increasing funding opportunities.


Simon Gilby has been chief executive of Coventry and Warwickshire partnership NHS Trust since August 2015. Previously he was CEO of Wirral Community NHS Trust. Simon has worked in operational, strategic and commissioning roles at national, regional and local levels of the NHS, including as chief executive of a primary care trust and a health authority.

Professor Paula Hyde is Professor of Organisations and Society and Director of the Health Services Research Centre at Alliance Manchester Business School. Her research and teaching interests lie in organising care, sociology of work and critical and psychodynamic explorations of how care is organised.

Kathryn Pugh, MBE, NHS England, Deputy Head of Mental Health and Children and Young People’s Mental Health Programme Lead

Eivor Oborn is current Professor of Healthcare Management in the area of Innovation and Organisational Change at Warwick Business School, UK and is currently the director of the PhD program and the MBA Health Specialisation program at WBS. She earned her PhD at Judge Business School, University of Cambridge, and was a recipient of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She is currently an honourary Fellow at Cambridge Judge Business School and Fellow at the Cambridge Centre for Digital Innovation (CDI). Her research interests span digital health, multidisciplinary working, knowledge management and leadership and collaboration during innovation. Prof Oborn has been involved in several large grants including Implementation Co-lead of Cambridge & Peterborough CLAHRC 2009-2013 and Implementation in the West Midland CLAHRC 2014- 2019, which entailed developing training material to practitioner stakeholders. She has several established international collaborations including with health scholars in Canada, Sweden, Germany and Australia. She has published in numerous elite journals including Information Systems Research, Organisation Science, MISQ and the Academy of Management Journal in the area of managing change and health technology.

Professor Graeme Currie: Graeme's work has been recently published in leading international journals, such as Academy of Management Journal, Human Resource Management, Public Administration Review, Organization Studies, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Leadership Quarterly, Human Relations, Journal of Management Studies, Social Science and Medicine. Current research grants, in which Graeme plays a major role, are: translation of research evidence through CLAHRC WM (funded by NIHR), absorptive capacity of commissioning networks in health and social care funded by NIHR HS&DR. He works closely with senior levels of a number of public services organisations (NHS, Police, local authority), third sector (Ear Foundation), and private sector (Alliance Boots), all of whom have provided research funding beyond that identified above. His work is interdisciplinary, involving colleagues from other divisions, such as enterprise (focusing upon leadership and innovation), within WBS, and working relationships at a strategic level, with colleagues in the Medical School.
