BAM2017 Doctoral Symposium Report

2nd October 2017

The 2017 Doctoral Symposium was one of the most successful in BAM’s history, with 170 delegates attending from 60 institutions in 15 countries.

A special thanks has to go to the presenters and tutors who volunteered their time and ensured that delegates enjoyed a packed and varied programme.

17 workshops, targeted at the distinctive needs of students at each stage of their projects and all research methods, were lively and well attended. The Research Conversations Session gave 41 students in-depth personal feedback about their own research challenges, and the Paper Presentations Session enabled 66 students to present their research in a supportive and friendly atmosphere.

The Poster Presentations enabled students to showcase their research during refreshment and lunch breaks. The Best Poster titled ' The impact of digital service innovations in retail agglomerations on retail destination attractiveness'  submitted by Amela Dizdarevic, Aston University. The runner-up of the Poster Award was given to Hind Aljohani, University of Sheffield for her poster titled 'Entrepreneurship in the Informal Economic Sector in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A Comparative Analysis of Enterprises According to Their Use of Social Media.

BAM would like to thank Pearson for sponsoring book vouchers worth £250 and £100 to the winner and runner-up respectively.

A number of delegates have been kind enough to provide some testimonials for the 2017 event - here is a selection:

I have attended the BAM Doctoral Symposium twice now, once in my first year and then in my final year, and both times have been invaluable in helping me to progress my research and this time in helping to build mt confidence for the viva. If you are thinking about whether to attend or not I can only say 'go for it!' BAM is supportive and welcoming and you will not regret it. Enjoy!

British Academy of Management (BAM) Doctoral Symposium provided me an excellent opportunity to interact with colleagues from various universities across the globe. The paper presentation session and feedback was remarkable. I would highly recommend all the PhD students to attend BAM DS to improve their research work. I am very happy to be a part of BAM community.

The BAM Doctoral Symposium 2017 was a fantastic opportunity to learn from established academics, network and gain valuable individualised feedback for my PhD. I would highly recommend adding it to your conference calendar.

Tony Beasley Award

Doctoral student Stella Stoycheva, Ca’Foscari University of Managementhas been awarded with the Tony Beasley Award at the annual British Academy of Management Conference at the University of Warwick. Stella's paper, regarded by the award panel as an outstanding accomplishment, is entitled ‘Measuring Sustainability from a Historical Perspective: A Critical Assessment of Metrics and their Changes’

The Tony Beasley Doctoral Award is made in memory of former doctoral student Tony Beasley who served on the Council of the British Academy of Management. The award is designed to recognise outstanding doctoral research in the form of a high quality academic paper presented to the annual BAM conference.

The feedback from participants so far has been very positive and it was clear that the work of academics in presenting, facilitating and nurturing ideas was much appreciated.

Once again, a huge vote of thanks to all who made this a very successful event.
