Event Report - BAM LLD and OTCD SIG Doctoral Writing Workshop

11th December 2017

Doctoral Writing Workshop, London, November 27th 2017

Dr Julie Wilson LLD SIG and Professor Ashley Braganza OTCD SIG

Held in The Work Foundation, this event was open to doctoral students within the Leadership and Leadership Development and Organisational, Transformation, Change and Development Special Interest Groups.

Thirty students at all stages of their PhDs had submitted papers that they were working on, either for specific advice about those papers, or for general support in writing for conference, publication and completion. Topics that appeared in the groups were wide ranging, from understanding relationship building in international joint ventures to the roles of corporate governance and gender in leading organisations and change.

The event started with a welcome address by Dr Julie Wilson. Dr Wilson highlighted four rules for writing well. These were elaborated upon by the two detailed seminars: the first on creating a strong introduction by Dr Murray Clark. The second focused on conducting effective research, in particular case study projects, delivered by Professor Ashley Braganza.

The rest of the day was taken up with small workshops where students shared their work and received constructive feedback from their peers and the experienced academics, including Dr Lynn Thurloway. The feedback from students was that the day had been very useful, both in terms of the content of the two seminars and the chance to discuss writing issues and solutions for individual pieces of work.

We would like to thank Dr Marian Iszatt White for her contribution to organising the workshop.
