Lancaster Intellectual Party/Summer Conference 2nd and 3rd July 2019


An invitation – submit your abstract by 1st March 2019

Lancaster University’s social science research students would like to invite other PhD students to an Intellectual Party/Summer Conference.

This event is a brilliant opportunity to meet and collaborate with research students from around the world, to present your work in a friendly and encouraging environment, and to meet and engage with some of Lancaster’s renowned academic staff. The Intellectual Party is more than just another conference – it combines academic challenge with a lot of fun as well!

All participants submit an abstract and give a twenty-minute presentation on their topic of choice, with time for feedback and questions. You can apply to present research on any topic in an open session or in one of the six themed sessions involving members of staff from across the social sciences at Lancaster University.

This year’s themes are:

  • Things DIGITAL – any aspect of the digital world
  • Things LEGAL – any aspect of law and legality
  • Things POLITICAL – any aspect of politics, governance, political process
  • Things ENVIRONMENTAL – any aspect of environment, nature, sustainability
  • PRACTICES – of all kinds.  – covers all aspects of social practice
  • COMMUNICATION, DESIGN, MEDIA – of all kinds. Covers all aspects of art, design, literature, media studies and more.

OPEN SESSIONS – you can submit an abstract on absolutely any topic.

There will be a ‘Three Minute Thesis’ competition with prizes for entrants who present their thesis or dissertation in the most convincing, interesting and effective way possible in just three minutes.

There is a programme of Academic Life Workshops (on Intellectual Identity, Getting an Academic Job, Research Methods: a practical exercise, Writing a PhD, Writing a Research Proposal); a game of floorball (don’t forget your trainers); as well as a mass book launch and a spectacular Grand Finale.

The registration fee for non-Lancaster students is £68 (with a subsidized fee of £25 for Lancaster students) which includes refreshments, dinner and lunches during the two days of the conference. Come along and bring your friends!
