‘The Big Con’ cliche
Yet another book, “The Big Con” by Mariana Mazzucato and Rosie Collington, has been recently published that supposedly reveals the work of management consultants as pushing worthless snake oil to gullible managers, and “infantilizing Government”.
Why is it that the work of management consultants is so readily vilified and decried as worthless, while at the same time the amount spent on management consulting continues to grow? Is it, for example, simply the use of ad hominem arguments? (As one consultant put it, ‘if you rearrange the letters of the word ‘consultant’ it spells scapegoat’!)
And what does this imply about the ability of managers, many of whom nowadays have had a spell in consultancy, who are seen as being so easily beguiled?
