This year’s SIMA-SIM-BAM School of Research Methods 2025 Summer School focusses on “In-depth interviewing” and will take place from 2nd - 4th July 2025 in the beautiful setting of the Florentine countryside at the Hotel Il Mulino in Florence.
In-depth interviewing is a fundamental research tool, widely used in the social sciences to capture deep insights and develop a thorough understanding of the phenomena being investigated. This summer school will offer a three-day full immersion in the lived experience of preparing, conducting, analyzing, interpreting, following up, and theorising in-depth interviews.
A faculty of five international scholars, experts in depth interviews, will lead participants on a journey into the heart of “ the depth interview ”, addressing topics such as ontological and epistemological assumptions, how to recruit and build trust with participants, how to be an active listener and conduct an effective interview, how to code, analyze and interpret interview data, how to use and triangulate interview data for theory building, how to manage ethics and follow-up with interviewees, how AI is challenging the depth interview.

- Anaysis, interpretation and ethical management of depth interviews (Rachel Ashman)
- Using depth interviews in business research (Emma MacDonald)
- Conducting interviews in business contexts: from theory to practice (Andrea Runfola)
The School is open to 30 young Italian and international scholars (PhD students, post-docs, junior researchers).
