BAM/AFAS/ISBE Virtual Doctoral Event: Mastering Systematic Literature Reviews and Interview Sampling Strategies

Staged by the BAM Leadership and Leadership Development Special Interest Group (British Academy of Management), the Academy for African Studies (AFAS), and the Entrepreneurship in Minority Groups Special Interest Group (ISBE)

Description

The Leadership and Leadership Development Special Interest Group (BAM)Academy for African Studies (AFAS) and the Entrepreneurship in Minority Groups Special Interest Group (ISBE) are pleased to announce a virtual event specifically designed to support doctoral researchers.

This event seeks to advance the methodological rigour and scholarly confidence of doctoral students by unpacking two critical yet often opaque elements of the research process: systematic literature reviews and interview sampling strategies. With a focus on demystifying these practices, the event aims to translate often implicit research procedures into explicit, actionable insights.

Session One: Demystifying the Systematic Literature Review

This session will explore the principles, structure, and scholarly rationale behind systematic literature reviews. Moving beyond traditional narrative approaches, it will highlight the value of methodological transparency and evidence-based synthesis. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of how to critically appraise existing literature, structure a rigorous review, and elevate the scholarly contribution of their work.

Session Two: Justifying Sampling in Qualitative Research

This session focuses on non-probability sampling techniques within qualitative inquiry, with particular attention to the justification of sampling choices for interviews. The discussion will address how well-articulated sampling rationales contribute to the trustworthiness and analytical depth of qualitative studies. Participants will leave with practical guidance on articulating and defending their sampling strategies in research design and viva settings.

By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to apply the insights shared to enhance the methodological robustness and scholarly impact of their doctoral research.

We are also delighted to welcome our distinguished speakers: Professor Christian Harrison (University of Greater Manchester) and Dr Kingsley Omeihe (University of the West of Scotland), whose expertise in doctoral education and research methodology will guide and enrich our discussions.

We look forward to your participation in what promises to be an engaging and transformative learning experience.
