BAM MKE 'How To' Series: Managing Extra-large Modules

Staged by the BAM Management, Knowledge and Education Sub Committee

Teaching at scale is no longer a niche practice – it is becoming the new normal. From foundational core modules to interdisciplinary electives, growing student numbers are reshaping how we design, deliver, assess, and support university education. But how do we make sure quality doesn’t suffer under quantity?

This online discussion panel brings together educators from the University of Exeter who have co-led and taught on some of the institution’s largest undergraduate modules – each enrolling 500+ students.

Panellists will reflect on their experiences of running flipped and asynchronous teaching, building inclusive and pro-social learning communities, managing high-volume assessments, and supporting diverse student cohorts across disciplines.

We’ll also explore the leadership and collaboration needed to make extra-large modules work – from convenors to PTAs and adjunct staff.
