Strategy SIG 2023 Coffee Morning May

The Strategy SIG wants to use the Coffee Mornings as an inclusive way to build a community.

Description

Hosted by our Strategy SIG, this coffee morning is an opportunity for any BAM member interested in the network to build up connections through informal chats. No preparation is required, just join the call with your preferred morning tea or coffee.

On May 18th, the British Academy of Management’s Strategy SIG will be hosting their latest coffee morning. This online event will provide a platform to deliberate on how to measure success. The discussion will encompass the traditional economic lens, the move towards stakeholder theory, and a consideration of how this conversation continues to unfold.

In the realm of academia, the measurement of company/firm/business performance serves as the ultimate dependent variable, as aptly noted by Wales (2016).  In light of this, the selection of an appropriate metric(s) is a crucial consideration. This is particularly noteworthy since research suggests that individuals often strive to improve the behaviours that are actively measured (Kaplan and Norton, 1992; Harrison and Wicks, 2013); even when such behaviours are futile or counterproductive (Caulkin, 2008).

Despite its significance, the quest for a clear and universally consistent definition of firm performance remains a challenge (Makadok, Burton and Barney, 2018). While company/firm/business performance may be deemed as the degree to which a firm achieves its objectives (McKenny et al., 2018), one still finds oneself pondering over what these goals should entail.

The Strategy SIG Coffee Mornings take place on the third Thursday of the month.
