Webinar synopsis

This workshop is dedicated to doctoral students at different stages of their PhD. In this round-table discussion three panellists who have recently been through this process will aim to demystify the emotional dimension associated with the viva, which is often invisible. Marking the end of the PhD journey and years of hard work, this workshop navigates dealing with different emotions (fear, anxiety, self-esteem) related to undergoing a doctoral viva.

Bringing forth our reflections and experiences of going through the viva, our panel sheds light on the invisible emotional roller-coaster that PhD students face before, during and after their viva by addressing the following questions:

• Before the viva: how to deal with the ‘imposter’ voice? how to mentally, physically and psychologically prepare for the viva? Am I doing the ‘right preparations’ for the viva? Did I do ‘enough’? will my answers be ‘good enough’?
• During the viva: How to be ‘myself’ in different viva settings, whether virtual or in-person? what tactics and strategies can I adopt to stay calm while addressing the examiners’ questions?
• After the viva: how to deal with the post viva mixed emotions? how to recognise, acknowledge and deal the post viva void?

Speakers

Dr Amal Abdellatif is Lecturer of Organisation Studies at Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University. Amal’s research focuses on gender on corporate boards and her research interests include the sociology of gender, intersectionality, masculinities and femininities, alternative forms of feminist organising, and intersectional inequalities in organisations. In exploring these themes, Amal contributes to the 'writing differently' agenda, engages with unconventional qualitative methodologies (such as interpretative phenomenological analysis and autoethnography) and the use of art-based approaches (photography, sketches, diaries, poems).

Dr Anneke Schaefer is a Lecturer of Human Resource Management at Manchester Metropolitan University. Anneke’s research focuses on gender and the work-family experiences of non-traditional families, particularly single parents and blended families. She is the assessment lead at MMU Business School’s People & Performance Department and has recently taken on the role as interim education lead.

Dr Sajia Ferdous is a Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour at Queen’s Management School, Queen’s University Belfast. Before joining QMS, she held positions at The University of Manchester, where she also completed her PhD in Business and Management from Alliance Manchester Business School. Sajia’s research mainly explores work-related inequalities with a special focus on the UK/European labour market contexts. Particularly, she is keen on understanding how people’s different social identities (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, age and class) cut across to shape their career trajectories.
