Dr Nuno Arroteia (Assistant Professor, University of Bradford, UK)

I am writing to express my strong interest in contributing to the Management, Knowledge and Education sub-committee as a member of the BAM Council. With a background in management education and entrepreneurship research and a passion for advancing knowledge and education through the use of digital technologies, I believe I can make a significant impact in this area.

My involvement with BAM so far has been mostly through attending BAM-organised continuing professional development events and conferences.

If elected, I would be dedicated to supporting the MKE sub-committees objectives. Specifically, I am keen on organizing capacity-building events, developing educational resources, and fostering collaborations between academia and industry to enhance management education. I am also eager to contribute to the governance and strategic planning of the MKE initiatives.
I understand the importance of active participation and commitment to BAM's goals. I am willing to attend sub-committee and Council meetings, provide regular progress reports, and contribute effectively to the delivery of BAM's vision.

Thank you for considering my nomination. I am excited about the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the Management, Knowledge, and Education domain within BAM.

Dr Barry Avery (Director of Learning and Teaching, Kingston University, UK)

I am an Associate Professor and Director of Learning and Teaching in the Business School at Kingston University. I moved into higher education after several years of IT consulting and working in further education; this background contributes to my interest in bringing authenticity into the classroom, both in activities, teaching materials and assessment practices. My research is in technology enhanced learning with a recent focus on increasing active engagement for groups where participation has traditionally been low. We are facing the post pandemic issues of low attendance and engagement; our challenge is to find a way to bring students back to learning and the classroom - technology, community and authenticity are the ways to achieve this.

I have been involved with BAM for two years, during which time I have attended development programmes and workshops. I have found my involvement to be highly rewarding, and I am keen to further contribute to the organisation's growth and development. If elected, I would continue the support for the diverse and inclusive community that make up the academy. I believe that my experience and passion for technology and community based learning would enable me to make a significant contribution.

Dr Stefan Cantore (Director of NHS Apprenticeship Programmes, University of Sheffield, UK)

Convening conversational spaces where we can all learn has been the primary focus of my academic and teaching career. Applying my doctoral research in conversational practice I have enjoyed designing and facilitating a number of Management, Knowledge and Education (MKE) annual conferences. Framing questions for teachers that encourage interest and our shared commitment to active collaborative inquiry has been key in this work.

Through my deep involvement in work-based learning with NHS leaders I am experiencing how the landscape of Higher Education is changing. With these shifts comes the need to further develop ourselves as learning and teaching practitioners. I believe BAM and the MKE group have a strategic role in stimulating research/inquiry into excellent teaching practice and then supporting its’ application in a very wide range of contexts. Through my previous involvement as a co-opted member of Council for 3 years in the recent past I believe I have positively contributed to BAM's mission. I wish now, if supported, to pick up this work again for the benefit of all BAM members. This is why I am asking for your vote. Thank you.

Ranjit Das (Senior Teaching Fellow, University of Strathclyde, UK)

As a former trustee of a School Multi-Academy Trust, I have experience holding formal office roles and the due commitment and work required.

I am an enthusiastic member of the academic community at the University. Working with the university staff development department, I recently launched a 'peer coaching' programme for new-in-role programme leaders to help orientate them during the tricky first year in the role.

As Director of Teaching and Learning for my department, I work with the Vice-Dean Academic and the other T&L directors to ensure teaching and learning are kept at the highest standards. Exploring how to harness the potential of ChatGPT is keeping the committee busy!

I am particularly proud of my contribution to establishing a Race, Ethnicity and Migration group at the University. This interdisciplinary research group brings together different researchers from across the university. The network seeks to generate impactful analysis that leverages our partnerships with the community and policymakers.

I hope the examples I have shared give an indication of the drive and enthusiasm I bring and provide a flavour of my interests.

To advance my practice into the digital spheres, I am currently developing a technology platform for supporting students’ higher education transition. In addition to my practice, I volunteered as a researcher at London’s Air Ambulance Charity.

The principal areas of my research interests include opportunity emergence process, nascent entrepreneurs, organization support systems (business incubators) and higher education transition management. My involvement with BAM is through participating their early career researchers’ development workshops. This year, I have acted as one of their peer reviewers. My current research paper has been accepted for the upcoming conference in September.

If I get elected, I would like to act as a Council Member for the Research and Publications committee. I am open to serve other sub-committees if required.

Dr Muhammad Mustafa Kamal (Associate Professor and Curriculum Lead in Business Analytics and Digital Transformation. Coventry University, UK)

I write to express my nomination for the council member at BAM. I have actively participated and contributed to various conferences (e.g., HICSS, AMCIS, EMCIS, ECIS in different capacities), allowing me to gain invaluable knowledge and insights. As a Council Member, I would like to utilise this vast experience and knowledge to help shape the BAM Conference into an even more impactful and enriching experience for attendees.

I am committed to promoting EDI within the business community. I firmly believe that promoting an inclusive environment is crucial for embracing diverse perspectives and driving innovation. I would actively advocate for these principles and work towards creating a platform that welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.

Dr Patrick McGurk (Associate Dean Education, Queen Mary University of London, UK)

I am a senior Teaching and Scholarship colleague in my institution and serve on the leadership team of a business school of over 3000 students and 130 faculty. I was previously Head of Human Resources and Organisational Behaviour at the University of Greenwich. I have held trustee and elected officer positions in a number of non-profit organisations. The main focus of my current contribution to the academy and business school community is leadership and scholarship in the areas of authentic learning and inclusion. For example, I recently led a five-year project that achieved the near-elimination of the BAME attainment gap on an undergraduate business programme of over 1000 students, largely recruited from a geographical area of severe socio-economic disadvantage. I have contributed to the MKE Teaching Practice Conference and completed the Becoming an Education-Focused Professor programme last academic year. As an experienced journal reviewer, I would gladly offer my research and scholarship expertise to the editorial team of the new British Academy of Management Learning & Education (BAMLE) journal. Similarly, it would be an honour to lend my leadership, management and governance experience and enthusiasm particularly to the new membership strategy, and especially among the teaching and scholarship/MKE community.

Professor Wilson Ng (Research Professor of Entrepreneurship; Chair of BAM Entrepreneurship SIG, IDRAC Business School, France)

I am a management researcher of severely challenged entrepreneurship: I research processes of venture creation by entrepreneurs who face existential challenges from their disabilities, and from institutional and informal barriers. I have co-founded several technology ventures in crowdfunding and engineering. I have been the elected chair of the Entrepreneurship SIG since 2021. I previously held the roles of Track Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer in this SIG. My agenda as SIG Chair is to develop the work and capabilities of early career researchers who comprise most of the SIG’s membership,

for example by engaging with the management community nationally and internationally.
As a BAM Council member, I would continue to build capacity in:

a) supporting early and mid-career members in developing impactful research, for example, by organising capacity-building events with peer groups nationally and in Europe,
b) research funding, acquiring cutting-edge knowledge and education of management, and SIG governance that would engage more SIG members in activities in and beyond their SIGs, and
c) organising activities, for example by collaborating with European management academies, to increase the visibility of BAM and the impact of members’ research. This impact would enact BAM’s vision to build and disseminate cutting-edge knowledge of management.

Dr Hien Tan Thu Nguyen (Lecturer in Management, Birmingham City University, UK)

I am currently a Lecturer in Management at Birmingham City University with multiple years’ experience working in the industry and in higher education. My disciplinary research focuses on sustainable entrepreneurship and green behaviors. I have been involved in activities to promote the scholarship of teaching and learning including presenting my research at conferences and creating impacts (our research findings on inclusivity were used by a UK university), organizing research seminars and CPD trainings, advising the University’s student office on enhancing student learning experience, advising the University Ethics Panel on ethics processes as an Ethics Lead for Business School. I am also a member of the UK Research and Innovation Talent Peer Review College, contributing to reviewing grant applications. As a BAM member, I have been actively involved in trainings, webinars and contributing to expanding the discussions provided by BAM. If elected, I wish to join the Management, Knowledge and Education (MKE) sub-committee as I believe my academic background and the activities I have been involved in largely fit with the MKE’s goals, thus, enabling me to contribute to activities organized by the sub-committee.

My research interests encompass several BAM SIGs. span several levels of analysis, and cover topics ranging from the ‘dark side of organizational behavior’ (e.g.,  organizational corruption, workplace aggression, occupational fraud) to its bright side (i.e., paradox theory and intentionally sustainable organizations). I have won awards for research, teaching, and reviewing. My involvement with BAM has been largely through my role (since 2016) as Associate Editor, IJMR. Given the opportunity, I would like to contribute to BAM’s vision with regard to ‘Research & Publications’, ‘Management, Knowledge & Education’ and Academic Capacity Building.

Mr Adrian Pryce DL (Associate Professor, University of Northampton, UK)

Following last year’s BAM Conference opening and the evident disconnect between academia and business, as a late career and commercially-minded and active academic, I would like to strengthen the practitioner voice on the Council, focusing on ESG-Sustainability - the subject of my two BAM papers (2022, 2023).

With an MBA from IESE and a career spanning banking, tourism, speciality chemicals, food & drink, and not for profits, I have 30 years international experience across the private-public-third-academic sectors.

I served on the boards of RCI Europe (£100m turnover) and Scott Bader Commonwealth, the holding company of a £250m employee-owned multinational chemicals business. This is complemented by my SME/charity experience, chairing children’s charities and NED in employee-owned businesses. My strategic mind allows me to facilitate understanding of complex issues in the classroom and boardroom.

My research interests are in the creation and measurement of social value. I am a B Corp B Leader and advise companies on their ESG strategies and reporting.

FHEA since 2010, I am a Fellow, Institute of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability. In 2022 I joined the Employee Ownership Association’s Membership Council and the IOD’s National Sustainability Taskforce. I am a Deputy Lieutenant of Northamptonshire.

I am a reader in Marketing and Leisure Management at the University of Wolverhampton, Business School, my research interests encompass Consumer Experience, Innovation, Big Data, Sharing Economy, CRM, Organisational Culture, Gender Equality, and Tourism Higher Education. I am associate editor for the tourism management perspective journal.  My involvement with BAM has been extensive and fulfilling. I have actively participated in BAM events, attending the conferences and serving as a grant reviewer. Notably, I conducted a successful professional development workshop on Sharing Economy and Smart Cities at the British Academy of Management Conference in 2019. These experiences have allowed me to connect with a diverse community of scholars and practitioners, fostering collaborations and sharing insights.
If elected to the BAM Council, I am dedicated to utilizing my expertise to contribute to the organization's objectives. I aim to facilitate knowledge exchange, promote research excellence, and support the professional development of BAM members. Furthermore, I aspire to strengthen the links between academia and industry, ensuring BAM remains at the forefront of addressing contemporary challenges and opportunities. I am enthusiastic about the possibility of serving as a BAM Council member and working alongside esteemed colleagues to shape the future of management research and education. Thank you for considering my nomination, and I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to contribute to BAM's ongoing success.

Dr Simon M Smith (Principal Lecturer in Business, Management and Enterprise, Oxford Brookes University, UK)

I believe I can bring my unique passion and energy to serving on the BAM Council. I have been readily and actively involved as co-Track Chair with the SIG Sustainable and Responsible Business since 2019 (and Treasurer since 2020). I am also a member of the BAM Peer Review College. I have helped to organize and run BAM events for our SIG, I have been involved in doctoral symposiums for the main conference, I won a Transitions II grant in 2019, and I publish extensively (as well as many other activities). I feel it is my well-rounded set of experiences that suit a role like this. I want to be a voice for all potential academics and bring innovations to life. As many might guess, I am passionate about pushing a responsible management education agenda, but I also want to drive further success through SIGs (and SIG collaborations), publications, events and networking nationally and internationally. I think I am a renowned completer-finisher and this is a crucial trait for delivering on innovative thinking. This would be a fantastic opportunity to step up my involvement with BAM and offer even more to our BAM community.

Dr Ian Stewart (Reader in Management Education, University of Manchester, UK)

I would like to serve the BAM council in the area of Management Knowledge and Education (MKE). I won the Experienced Education Practitioner Award 2018 and took part in the first Teaching-Focussed Professor programme. In my department, I lead in supporting the teaching aspects of colleagues’ careers and signpost to BAM provisions extensively. I speak about these with conviction having seen their benefit in my professional life. I actively support MKE initiatives and have advised several Teaching Award winners. My research interests are in experiential education particularly games and simulations and post-experience learning. I recently completed funded research on the impact of AI on the professional status of Project Managers. For management careers and education this is a vital topic. The BAM vision of a ‘Business and Management Knowledge ecosystem’ can only be fully realised if the full scope of generation, co-production and exchange of management knowledge is recognised. If elected as a committee member I plan to increase awareness of management higher education outside business schools and outside of traditional student groups, particularly post-experience learners. Interdisciplinary relations will enrich British management education preparing learners for management of innovative organisations in a diverse range of contexts, from Fashion to Astronomy.

Dr Nikolaos Stylos (Senior Lecturer in Marketing, University of Bristol, UK)

I am passionate and enthusiastic to join the BAM council and work with SIGs in developing an agenda and strategy for developing transdisciplinary research for the resolution of real-life problems. My potential to contribute to the BAM council is evident per my multidisciplinary background and expertise in both Management (Marketing) and Mechanical/Reliability Engineering, as well as my 11-year career as a professional management and technical consultant. As research councils have started promoting and releasing calls for funding to tackle complex type of challenges, multidisciplinary teamwork becomes vital for effectively integrating social, natural, health sciences, engineering - with management as the epicentre. My research specialisation in decision-making science as influenced by new technologies and applied in the service industries, has gifted me with a rich experiential repository to collaborate with social scientists, engineers, and IT scholars (currently, director of two university-wide research groups at the University of Bristol). I can help identify and/or generate opportunities for personal and collective development in transdisciplinary research for BAM members and contribute to the vital role BAM plays in terms of UK competitiveness in research and impact. I kindly ask for your vote to join BAM council and work with the members towards this goal.
