2019, the MKE project launched the ‘Becoming an Education-focussed Professor’ series that aimed specifically at supporting and developing business school academics on a Teaching and Scholarship track.

Last year’s focus for our ‘Becoming an Education-focussed Professor’ series was based on capacity building events to define education-focussed scholarship in a way that becomes useable, accessible and open to assessment, building on the Boyer/Carnegie fundamentals that it should be delivered externally and open to peer review.

For 2020, we are pleased to say that this initiative will continue with a series of interactive events.  The overarching goals of this MKE project remain:

  • To promote the centrality of the scholarship of teaching and learning in business schools and to achieve parity for teaching and scholarship (T&S) academics with research focused academics in consideration of promotion decisions. We propose that the scholarship of teaching and learning and conventional basic research (the scholarship of discovery) should be valued equally in terms of the status, recognition and reward for success.
  • To explore and establish the relevance of other forms of scholarship for T&S academics. This may include (to some extent and with particular focus) the scholarship of discovery (conventional research), along with the scholarship of integration and the scholarship of application.
  • To provide a programme of development for BAM members who wish to understand the nature and modalities of scholarship and develop their own scholarship profile.

The theme for 2020 is ‘Understanding and Capturing Your Impact’.  Here we add the goals of:

  • Offering facilitated time to understand and capture your impact to aid learning plus help career advancement.
  • Continuing to build on our strong community of scholars via further capacity building events.

Programme

The programme is based on using time in 2020 to initially consider then facilitate the building and showcasing of your impact.

Session 1 will officially launch the 2020 ‘Understanding and Capturing Your Impact’ Programme.  In this session we will consider the range of different ways through which visible impact can be generated.  These include National Teaching Fellowships, conferences, publication outlets and Higher Education Academy (HEA) Fellowships.  The initial BAM White Paper findings from last year’s Education Focussed Professor Series will also be shared.

Session 2 continues the thinking of the first session and focuses on mapping your impact.  The UK Professional Standards Framework will be used as a basis of this online exercise.  This is most helpful irrespective of whether you are looking to apply for, or upgrade your existing HEA Fellowship status.  In the session, facilitated time will be given to chart your experiences to the offered Professional Values and therein, to consider the appropriate level of HEA Fellowship.

Session 3 The third session of the 2020 Education Focussed Professor Series helps us to better understand Management Education journals and develop potential publications.  The day will be formed of two parts.  In the first part, a panel that includes Editors-in-Chief will talk to the nature of their respective journals and invite questions.  Following this, three possibilities are available.  As you may have been working on future publications, delegates have the opportunity to submit a working paper (full and/or developmental) in advance of the day so that it can be considered for roundtable discussions that will help its development; alternatively, you may wish to join these roundtable discussions to help shape the work of others; or, you can speak to members of the journal editorial boards with ideas for future outputs.  Participants of this event are required to have BAM Membership and can submit a maximum of one full paper and two developmental papers for consideration of workshop discussion.

Programme and Paper Submission Guidelines, Session 3

Session 4 focuses on Disciplinary impact where Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Organisational Behaviour arenas that help build impact are considered in the respective learning circles.  A track that considers becoming a Dean will also be offered.
