Synopsis
This is the welcome event to a series run by the Marketing and Retail SIG at BAM which is aimed at Doctoral and Early career researchers.
The series aims to provide insights into the academic journey that lies ahead of them. Be that into research considering funding applications, choosing a suitable journal, collaborations and writing from the PhD thesis, or into lecturing relating to pedagogical methods, authentic assessment and teaching within the changing world of HE; amongst others.
Wellbeing and support as an early career researcher is identified as an important topic to explore throughout the series, experiences will be shared from experienced academics as well as shining a light on early career researchers transition into academia.
This first session will be followed by workshops focused on particular topics covered during the event along with ‘coffee chats’ for the purpose of networking and sharing ideas and ‘surgery hours’ entailing support for, paper writing, research methods, teaching methods and general help. The latter will be a dialogue between invited experts and attending delegates.

Dr Jason Begley is an Associate Professor in the Centre for Business in Society (CBiS), Coventry University. His key areas of research interest are Economic Development and Economic History, with his most recent work focusing on issues of occupations, accessibility and mobility. He is currently based in the Centre for Business and Society, Coventry University, where he has been serving as an Academic Director for Postgraduate Research since 2015. Overseeing approximately 100 doctoral candidates and their supervisory teams, he is responsible for vetting applications, ensuring supervisory standards, organising research events and developing research networks regionally. He is published in the Cambridge Journal of Economics, Business History, Transport A and D and has also refereed for the Economic History Review. His most recent book with his colleagues Professor Glauco de Vita and Dr David Bowen “Roadmap to a successful PhD in Business & management and the social sciences: The definitive guide for postgraduate researchers” offers a guide to aspiring Postgraduate Researchers to successfully completing their doctoral studies.

Dr Etieno Enang is a lecturer in Business Management and an Associate Course Director for MSc International Business Management at Coventry University (CU). She obtained her PhD in Strategy and Organisation (without corrections) from the University of Strathclyde in March 2020. Her research interests lie within the intersection of strategy, leadership, and social change, focusing on whether and how management theory and practice can contribute to making organisations, institutions and societies more just, equitable and sustainable.
Dr Enang is a member of the Black excellence group and a mentee under the Experience Accelerator Leadership Development programme at CU. She is also an ASPiRE (Academic Support Programme in Research Excellence) Fellow at CU. She has a journal publication, a number of working papers and several conference papers accepted to high-ranking conferences, such as AOM, EGOs and BAM.

Carley Foster is Professor of Services Marketing and Head of the Centre for Business Improvement at the University of Derby. Her research focuses on services marketing and retailing. After completing her first degree in Business Studies, Carley worked as an assistant buyer at Boots the Chemists’ head office. She returned to academia and completed her funded PhD. Carley then successfully secured the first ESRC postdoctoral fellowship at Nottingham Business School. She has been a lecturer, senior lecturer and a Reader in Retail Management before joining Derby in 2016. She has over 80 publications and her work has been funded by organisations such as the ESRC, Innovate UK and the Academy of Marketing. She is an experienced doctoral supervisor, previously running one of the largest DBA programmes in the UK, and has taught in France and the USA. Carley holds several academic and industry positions. She is a Board Member for the Cathedral Quarter BID in Derby and Marketing Peak District and Derbyshire, an elected committee member for the Marketing and Retail SIG at BAM and an advisor to Derby City Council’s successful £15m application to the Future High Streets fund. She is currently the Academic Lead for a KTP with Chatsworth House which is exploring the impact of the estate’s activities on the region. Most recently she has led the REF submission for Business and Management Studies at the University of Derby.

Dr Chapman conducts research and delivers lectures at the School of Strategy and Leadership (SSL) in the Faculty of Business and Law (FBL) at Coventry University (CU). Dr Chapman is also Deputy Director of the BA Business Management (Hons) course. In Dr Chapman’s vocational capacity, he delivers lectures and seminars to the academic and apprenticeship programmes at CU, as well as designs and delivers impact training for internal and external stakeholders, particularly in DSDM / Agile project management and ISO31000 risk management. Dr Chapman specialises in research-enhanced teaching, for example researching and developing his own Online Learning Environment (OLE) for simulation and dialogic feedback. Dr Chapman is also an ASPiRE fellow at FBL establishing an emerging portfolio of multi-modal academic outputs (including academic conferences) on the subjects of sustainable production and consumption, and narrative and decision-making simulation in AI. Dr Chapman is also an HEA Fellow, which recognises ‘personal and institutional commitment to professionalism in learning and teaching in higher education’.

Neil Hughes is Professor of Languages and Digital Learning Technologies at the University of Nottingham. His research spans blended and blended language learning, digitally- enhanced teaching and learning in the Arts and Humanities, Critical Discourse Analysis and Social Movement Studies with a particular emphasis on Spain. He has published book chapters and articles on these issues in: Barataria, Arts and Humanities in Higher Education (forthcoming), The Language Learning Journal and Social Movement Studies. In 2020, he was the Association for Learning Technology’s (ALT) Learning Technologist of the Year in the research category. His research on blended learning design has appeared in national and international journals and in 2020, he was awarded ‘Learning Technologist of the Year’ for his ‘Moodle Redesign Initiative’. The award recognised his, ‘excellent practice and outstanding achievement in the learning technology field.’
