Description

Whilst the role of supervision is critical to the success of all doctoral students, the role of the doctoral community within which you sit also has a vital contribution to play. The potential loneliness of the PhD/DBA journey is a well-recognised phenomenon and often referred to, and yet by creating and contributing to the doctoral community it need not be so.

Sharing insights from successfully implemented peer-to-peer mentoring programmes and student-led support groups, this workshop will explain the value that mentoring has to play in generating PhD success and the creation of long-term relationships, including publishing partnerships, that can continue into one's future academic career.

Acting as both a mentor and being mentored (as the mentee) builds skills, knowledge and capabilities that are of value both during and after your PhD whether you go into industry or into academia. In this workshop you will learn the key principles of how you can create this environment for yourself. You will gain insights relating to the positive impact mentoring can have, and understand how to develop your own mentoring skillset.

As beneficiaries of such a mentoring system have said previously, 'a doctoral peer support network helps us navigate our academic journeys, providing collective practical knowledge, a sense of community and emotional sustenance along the way.'
