Strategic Entrepreneurship: A critical consideration of the dual pursuit of strategy and entrepreneurship, and the role of entrepreneurial entropy / resource exhaustion

The Strategic Entrepreneurship event will offer an insightful and thought-provoking conversation regarding the direction of the SE literature/research..

Event description

Are you interested in the ongoing discussion regarding the dual pursuit of strategy and entrepreneurship?  Are you interested in understanding the points at which entrepreneurial efforts start, yielding, diminishing, and even negative returns?  If so, you won’t want to miss the BAM Strategic Entrepreneurship (SE) Conference on June 29th, from 9.30am.

This half day, online event, is co-hosted by the BAM Strategy and Entrepreneurship SIGs.  It will bring together top scholars and practitioners to discuss the current and future directions of the field.  Broken into distinct sections, we will cover:

·         Questions regarding the dual pursuit of Strategic Entrepreneurship.

·         Entropy and Resource Exhaustion; How should scholars and managers plan, and "balance", strategic and entrepreneurial activities.

·         A break-out discussion.

Event Structure:

The session will be split across several sessions:

1. The Strategic Entrepreneurship crossroads (60 minutes)

  • Firm success accrues increasingly to firms able to position themselves strategically by using entrepreneurial activities to gain and maintain a competitive advantage.
  • We need to justify the need for the dual pursuit of SE

 15-minute Break

2. Entropy and/or Resource Exhaustion / (and how to balance strategic and entrepreneurial efforts) (60 minutes)

  • What is the appropriate balance between the two behaviours, and is that balance idiosyncratic based upon different factors (e.g., industry, size, top management team characteristics, diversification level)?
  • What can firms do to avoid concentrating excessively on either opportunity- or advantage-seeking behaviour to the point that the behaviour becomes a core rigidity?

 15-minute Break

3. Panel - Breakout session (60 minutes)
