Webinar synopsis

This webinar discusses the results of an investigation into the perceptions, reflections and interpretations of Black and minority ethnic (BME) academics of both the mentoring they received and the mentoring process in UK university institutions.  It highlights the ways in which BME academics believed that their difference on the salient demographic characteristics of race and ethnicity impacted negatively on their careers.  That is, the findings suggest that BME academics perceived the nature of mentoring they received to be inferior to the mentoring received by their white counterparts.  The webinar explores the ways in which the university context in which mentoring takes place exacerbated these differences and amplified the negative experiences of mentoring by BME career aspirants.  The webinar concludes by exploring the implications of these findings for both BME academics and UK institutions of higher learning.

This event is part of the annual BAM Academic Affairs of Conference and Capacity Building (AACCB) Masterclasses.

Our series of BAM Masterclasses are delivered by prominent management theorists from across the globe each year. These online webinars are an exceptional learning experience, revealing how top academics think about the world, what inspires them, and how they develop and apply their ideas. Where do influential ideas come from? What leads to them to being widely taken up?

During the Masterclasses, our highly renowned speakers explain how their academic and intellectual journeys begun, and how they developed as influential academics in management. There are also opportunities to ask questions and engage directly with the speakers.
