Join us on Thursday 30 October for the inaugural lecture of Professor Katy Mason, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Dean of Salford Business School.

Professor Mason’s lecture ‘Making & Shaping Moral Markets’ will explore how markets are not simply “out there” but are made and shaped through our collective actions (and inactions). Drawing on over 20 years of research into markets and using practice theory, Katy will unpack how purposive, accidental and everyday practices can transform markets – shifting them towards delivering better value for people and planet.

Using examples from past projects on the commercialisation of science, digitally connected places, and the market for Santa Clause, Katy will consider how distributed actors might be mobilised to create new devices and rules that coordinate action across organisational, policy and civic settings. Her lecture will pose an important question: how can we make markets moral?

Katy Mason joined the University of Salford in December 2025 from Lancaster University Management School, where she was Professor of Markets and Management and served as Associate Dean for Research between 2020 and 2023. Before entering academia, Katy worked as a marketing executive for several major companies. Katy is currently President of the British Academy of Management and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Her research focuses on how markets are made and shaped, especially how moral concerns can become embedded in market infrastructures to deliver social, environmental, and economic value. She has collaborated with a range of organisations, from major corporates such as Rolls-Royce and Microsoft to government bodies including the Cabinet Office.

The event will be hosted on Thursday 30 October 2025
