Stories support entrepreneurs in overcoming challenges during crises (Manning et al., 2019; Haloub et al., 2022) and in developing collective capacities to build sustainable futures (Muñoz et al., 2025). Nonetheless, existing literature often centres on individualised narratives of women entrepreneurs and their struggles (Afshan et al., 2021; Bahn et al., 2020; Jaim, 2025) or their relative resilience (Begheri et al., 2024; Jaim, 2024; Matharu & Juneja, 2024; McCarthy, 2003; Onoshakpor et al., 2020) within the context of crises, where women tend to be portrayed as passive recipients of their situation/environment. Engagement with enquiries beyond the women's conditions, traditionally emphasised in a discourse of vulnerability and victimhood, has become more critical than ever, raising the question: What other stories exist, and what will we do with those?
We seek perspectives that recognise women entrepreneurs/ship as active agents of change (rather than passive participants), who affect changes at multiple levels across different crisis timeframes, including before, during, and after crises, and along the continuum. We are interested in investigating women entrepreneurs’ strengths, contributions, and other positive perspectives related to crisis. We also encourage bringing to light the lesser-discussed dark sides of women’s entrepreneurship. Our objective is to advance theory, practice and policy in women’s entrepreneurship by soliciting accounts that address underexplored intersections of entrepreneurship, gender, and crisis.
This call for papers seeks contributions that offer “Other Stories” of women entrepreneurs that go beyond merely enduring crisis through challenge confrontation or resilience. In other words, we encourage submissions on underexplored dimensions of women’s entrepreneurship in the context of diverse crises and conflicts that transcend the well-rehearsed portrayal of women as passive victims or inherently vulnerable actors. This Special Issue invites empirical studies and conceptual papers that advance theoretical understanding by adopting various methodological approaches and tools — qualitative, quantitative, and intervention — and by attending to different levels of analysis and their relationships.
