The Candidates:

BAM Co-Vice Chair for Communities

Dr Fariba Darabi

Institution: Bangor University, UK

Position: Associate Professor in Management

I am standing for Co-Vice Chair for Communities position as I believe BAM’s SIGs, Networks, and Conference Tracks are central to the success of the Academy and my aim is to help strengthen BAM.

Communities to create opportunities for collaboration, professional development, knowledge exchange, and the development of supportive scholarly communities and to ensure SIGs continue to provide value to members at all career stages. I have the passion and experience in supporting the strategic direction of this portfolio.

I am an experienced management educator with a long-standing career in both industry and academia. I have been a BAM member for 18 years and have contributed to the Academy in a variety of leadership roles, including Secretary of the Entrepreneurship SIG, Track Chair for the Research Methodology SIG, and currently as a member of BAM Council through the Management Knowledge and Education Committee. I co-lead BAM’s flagship programme, the Education-Focussed Professor. I also co-chair the Research Methodology SIG, contribute to BAM’s annual Doctoral Colloquium through mentoring and delivering workshops on mixed-methods research to the community of Doctoral and Early Career Researchers. These engagements have given me a clear understanding of SIGs Communities’ needs. Also, in recognition of these contributions, I was honoured to receive the BAM Medal for Knowledge Development.

If elected, my four priorities will be supporting Communities’ collaboration, being the voice of SIGs’ members, supporting Communities’ engagement beyond the conference, and enhancing scholarly impact.

I will work closely with my co-vice Chair, SIGs, Network, and Track Chairs to support the sharing of good practice and encourage collaboration across BAM Communities. Through regular engagement and open communication, I will help create opportunities for communities to learn from one another, develop new initiatives, and foster inclusive environments. These activities will be aligned with BAM’s EDIR portfolio.

I will actively represent the perspectives of SIGs and Networks within the Executive and help strengthen communication between SIGs members and BAM leadership, ensuring that members’ views and ideas inform future developments.

Building on the BAM Framework and my previous experience of organising webinars, workshops,  mentoring activities, and research events, I will encourage and support Communities in developing  year-round opportunities for members to collaborate and share knowledge.

I would like to help Communities enhance their scholarly impact by supporting the development of strong conference tracks and encouraging collaborative initiatives such as special issues, edited collections, research seminars, and interdisciplinary projects. These activities can help strengthen research networks and create opportunities for members to engage in meaningful collaborations.

I believe BAM Communities can strengthen connections between research, practice, and policy.  Drawing on my industry experience and research in engaged scholarship and university–industry  collaboration, I will support initiatives that enhance engagement with practitioners, professional bodies, and policymakers, increasing the visibility, relevance, and impact of BAM members' work through collaborative partnerships and BAM’s Practice Engagement portfolio.

Finally, I am committed to create a connected, inclusive, and supportive Communities portfolio to the benefit of SIGs members and contribute to BAM’s continued success as a leading learned Society.

Professor Qile (Horace) He

Institution: University of Derby, UK

Position: Professor of Strategy and Performance Management

As a long-serving member of BAM for over 20 years, it is an honour to stand for the role of Co–Vice-Chair (Communities). I am currently Professor of Strategy and Performance Management at Derby International Business School, where I also serve as Chair of the Research Degrees Committee. In addition, I am Vice-Chair of the Research Committee within the Institute of Education and Skills and Derby International Business School. I am a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and a Fellow of the BAM Peer Review College. I offer my candidacy with a strong commitment to serving and strengthening the BAM community.

First, I bring extensive experience within BAM, particularly in the Communities sub-committee. I previously served as Co-Chair of the Inter-organizational Collaborations SIG and Conference Track Co-Chair for six consecutive years (2013–2019). I was a member of BAM Council from 2020 to 2025 and have continued to contribute since 2026 through co-option, supporting the Communities sub-committee. I have also been a member of the BAM Peer Review College since 2021 and a Fellow since 2024. Through these roles, I have successfully contributed and shaped the strategic development of the Communities portfolio.

I have held senior roles including Associate Head of School (Research), Chair of College Research Committee, and Interim University Theme Lead. These positions have strengthened my ability to make informed, balanced, and strategic decisions—skills that will enable me to effectively support SIGs and members.

Third, I have a deep understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing BAM’s SIGs and wider communities. Having organised multiple conference tracks and events, I recognise that SIGs are central to BAM’s growth, academic impact, and resilience. They require sustained engagement, resources, and strategic support to continue thriving.

Fourth, I offer extensive research experience. I have published over 120 journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. I serve on editorial boards for CABS 3* and 4* journals and act as Associate Editor for an international journal. I am part of the editorial board for BAM’s publication Business Research Unpacked. My experience includes guest editing special issues for BAM journals (BJM and IJMR), as well as leading and contributing to externally funded projects supported by the European Commission, the British Academy, and others. I also review for major funding bodies, including Horizon Europe and the Leverhulme Trust. These experiences position me to support SIGs and members in advancing research excellence and impact.

  1. Enhance BAM’s impact by promoting collaboration between SIGs and external stakeholders, including learned societies, industry, policy bodies, and international partners.

  1. Strengthen alignment across BAM subcommittees to provide more coherent and valuable development opportunities for members.

I am committed to contributing my experience and dedication to support BAM’s continued growth as a vibrant, inclusive, and impactful academic community.

Vice Chair for Sustainability

Dr Ben Davies

Institution: Bath Spa University

Position: Senior Lecturer

The post of VC Sustainability is a cross-cutting role and has responsibility for supporting sustainability across all of BAM’s activities. If elected I would strive to support these aims to guide BAM to becoming the globally leading Academy on sustainability issues building on the foundations laid by Jan Bebbington and Emma Macdonald. I see three broad areas for action:

  1. Developing a roadmap to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. This would involve an integrated programme including auditing current emissions, targeting feasible emissions reductions measures, facilitating a complete shift to renewable energies, considering use of gold-standard off-sets for unavoidable emissions, and exploring funding and partnerships to support these actions. Pursuing this path would draw on the deep knowledge, skills and commitment already available across BAM to support this transition, also being mindful that by 2030 BAM aims to have more members and more activity networking and collaborating between members, all of which raises the challenge of achieving net zero.
  2. Coordinating internally across BAM in support of sustainability initiatives and improvements. This involves working with the BAM Board and other VCs, SIG tracks and Chairs, Fellows and Grant Holders, increasing recognition and support for sustainability initiatives. I think a valuable element here would be to establish a knowledge base for on-going best practice focused on BAM activities, particularly in support of high impact activities such as in-person conferences and workshops alongside the digital energy footprint from virtual/hybrid events and increasing use of AI. Among other measures I would also support increasing visibility for current initiatives such as the Sustainable Futures Publication of the Year Award, as well as working to support ECRs and research students pursuing sustainability pathways.
  3. Representing BAM in policy debates on sustainability and HE, and working on sustainability initiatives with other potential partner organisations in the UK such as the Higher Education Academy, CABS, PRME and Advance HE, alongside liaising internationally with other Academies of Management to share, develop and expand best practice (AOM, EURAM, AAOM and others).

For the last eight years I have been Sustainability Lead in Bath Business School (Bath Spa University) where I lead our sustainability teaching provision alongside responsibility for coordination of our School postgraduate research programme. I am also institutional lead for the UN Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiative and a reviewer for the annual PRME Postgraduate Essay Prize competition. My research work focuses on the green economy and I have previously served two terms as an elected board member of the European Society for Ecological Economics (ESEE). I have experience serving on both Local Organising Committees and Scientific Review Committees for past ESEE conferences, have been Principal and Co-Investigator on a number of research grants, and I am currently supervising four doctoral students.

As an institution BSU was ranked second in the UK in the 2025-26 People & Planet University League Table rankings which reflects our integrated and long-term commitment to sustainability initiatives. Among other initiatives we offer carbon literacy training to our staff and students, and our business school staff are supported in gaining sustainability teaching accreditations with PRME and other partners.

I would be honoured to serve as VC Sustainability 2027-28 and I would strive to use my experience to guide BAM towards becoming globally recognised for its sustainability leadership.

Dr Hajar Fatorachian

Institution: Leeds Beckett University

Position: Reader in Supply Chain Sustainability and Digitalisation

I am delighted to stand for election as Vice Chair for Sustainability of BAM. Throughout my academic and professional career, I have been committed to advancing sustainability through research, education, industry engagement, and professional service. I believe BAM has a unique opportunity to lead and shape debates on responsible management, sustainable business, and the role of emerging technologies in addressing societal challenges.

My vision is for BAM to strengthen its position as a leading voice on sustainability across management research, education, policy, and practice. Sustainability is no longer solely an environmental issue; it encompasses environmental stewardship, social responsibility, equality and inclusion, economic resilience, ethical leadership, responsible innovation, and the governance of emerging technologies. BAM is well placed to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, support impactful research, and help members address the complex sustainability challenges facing organisations and society. I believe BAM can play a leading role in advancing research and practice that supports sustainable and resilient organisations while creating long-term value for businesses, communities, and society.

I am particularly passionate about promoting ethical and inclusive approaches to digital transformation. Alongside my research in supply chain sustainability and digitalisation, I have led and contributed to projects exploring the ethical and inclusive adoption of artificial intelligence, AI-driven innovation in SMEs, and the integration of sustainability, ethics, equality, diversity, inclusion, and responsible AI into management education. Through a BAM-funded research project and wider curriculum development activities, I have worked to ensure that future managers and leaders are equipped to navigate both the opportunities and challenges associated with technological change while creating positive outcomes for organisations and society.

I bring a combination of academic leadership, research expertise, and professional engagement to this role. I am a Reader in Supply Chain Sustainability and Digitalisation at Leeds Beckett University, where my research focuses on sustainable supply chains, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, resilience, and decarbonisation. My work has been published in leading international journals and has generated impact through collaborations with businesses, policymakers, and professional bodies.

My commitment to service extends across both academic and professional communities. I currently serve as Industry Engagement Officer for BAM’s Operations and Supply Chain Management Special Interest Group (SIG), supporting collaboration between academia and practice. I am also a Trustee of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and contribute to standards development through my involvement with BSI and ISO committees. These roles have strengthened my understanding of how research can inform policy, professional practice, and societal outcomes.

If elected, I would work collaboratively with colleagues across BAM to enhance the visibility and impact of sustainability initiatives, support early-career researchers, encourage interdisciplinary partnerships, and strengthen engagement with industry and policymakers. I am committed to ensuring that sustainability remains embedded across BAM’s activities and that the Academy continues to provide leadership on the critical challenges facing organisations, communities, and future generations.

I would be honoured to serve as Vice Chair for Sustainability and contribute to BAM’s continued success as a leading learned society promoting impactful, responsible, ethical, and inclusive management scholarship.

Dr Silvia Tedesco

Institution: University of Salford

Position: Reader of Sustainability

I am standing for election as BAM’s Vice-Chair for Sustainability because I believe business and management scholars play a vital role in shaping more sustainable futures. The interconnected challenges of climate change, resource constraints, social inequality and industrial transformation require cross-disciplinary collaboration and the translation of knowledge into action. BAM is uniquely placed to bring together researchers, educators, practitioners, and policymakers, and I would be honoured to contribute to this collective effort.

My vision is to embed sustainability across all BAM activities: not only as a research theme but as a guiding principle shaping operations, collaboration and impact. This includes conferences, SIGs, publications, research, grants, awards, and the Fellows College. It also involves strengthening visibility and coherence across communications, digital presence and membership activities so sustainability is consistently integrated across the organisation.

A core priority would be working with the BAM Office to strengthen monitoring of sustainability across activities, including the website, social media and membership engagement. I would support clear approaches to tracking progress, identifying gaps, and ensuring regular reporting to the Executive Committee so that commitments are transparent, measurable and continuously improved.

I would collaborate across BAM committees to support and advise, where appropriate, by identifying evidence-informed opportunities to embed sustainability more effectively across BAM’s portfolio. I would also help raise awareness of sustainability in business and management education and research, ensuring good practice is shared and scaled across the community.

I would like to engage with external partners across academia, industry, policy and international learned societies to bring best practice into BAM and ensure BAM contributes outwardly to wider sustainability debates and practice, strengthening its relevance and impact in addressing global challenges.

As an Industrial and Management Engineer by background, my academic career focuses on developing and translating sustainability solutions to complex societal and industrial challenges. I am Associate Professor and Sustainability Lead at the University of Salford’s Centre for Sustainable Innovation, leading research on sustainable innovation, circular economy approaches, and net-zero transitions, supported by over £2.8 million in competitive funding from EPSRC, Innovate UK, the Royal Society, and regional programmes. I also founded the FIVE-C Network, now spanning over 100 members across nine UK universities, and co-lead the EPSRC-funded DICE Network+, bringing together academics, businesses, charities, and policymakers to accelerate sustainable innovation and strengthen collaborative leadership. Alongside this, I am committed to mentoring early-career researchers, supporting doctoral training, and fostering inclusive research cultures. I actively engage with the PRME community, supporting the integration of sustainability, ethics, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals into management education.

As Vice-Chair for Sustainability, I would bring strategic leadership, practical experience and a collaborative approach to embed sustainability across BAM activities, strengthen monitoring and transparency, enable cross-committee collaboration, and deepen external partnerships. My aim is to ensure BAM makes a meaningful and lasting contribution to addressing sustainability challenges facing organisations, communities, and society, while advancing impactful research, education, and engagement for the public good.
