The British Academy of Management made a series of awards during our 39th Annual Conference at the University of Kent, to celebrate outstanding contributions made by business and management scholars, not just through their research but also the important contributions to society they have made.

Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award

The Richard Whipp Lifetime Achievement Award is given annually in memory of Professor Richard Whipp, an outstanding scholar in the field of business and management and former Chair of BAM, to recognise the course of a career within the Business and Management field.

This year it was awarded to Professor Gerard P. Hodgkinson, University of Manchester, UK, for major contributions to the cognitive perspective on business and management. His work has had a profound impact at the intersections of psychology and strategic management, in the emerging interdisciplinary subfield known as behavioural strategy, and in the related field of occupational and organizational psychology and several roles within BAM, such as General Editor of the British Journal of Management, and former member of Council.

Medals

As part of our 30th anniversary celebrations, we created a set of medal awards to provide public recognition for important contributions made by our members and others. Nominations are made by Council, Fellows and SIG Chairs and are reviewed by a committee. Eight were given this year:

The BAM Medal for Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity and Respect was given to Professor Martyna Sliwa, Professor of Management and Organisation at the University of Bath.

Martyna was nominated as a globally recognised leading scholar and expert in management and organisation studies. Martyna has made outstanding contributions as BAM’s first Vice Chair for Equality, Diversity, Inclusivity and Respect. Her contributions to EDIR at BAM have included developing the All Welcome Guide to inclusive, accessible and sustainable events and shaping BAM’s strategic priorities in this important area.

The BAM Medal for Leadership was given to Professor Carmen Cabello Medina for her sustained and outstanding leadership in her role as President of our sister organization in Spain - ACEDE, and specifically for her pivotal role in connecting the BAM and ACEDE communities, thereby making a significant contribution to the academic community of BAM members at an international scale.

The BAM Medal for Knowledge Development was awarded to two recipients:

Dr Fariba Darabi, Bangor University, UK was nominated for the sustained contribution she has made in disseminating knowledge within BAM. This includes co-leading on the BAM MKE Education Focused Professor Programme for several years, and being a strong advocate for the doctoral community.

The BAM Medal for Contribution to Communities was given to three recipients this year:

Professor Christian Harrison, University of Greater Manchester,

The medal recognises their work in building important contributions to a SIG or Network in an outstanding and sustained way, setting an excellent example of leadership that fully reflects BAM’s values.

The BAM Medal for Contribution to Research recognises those who have made sustained, original contributions to management research by a BAM member.

The recipient of this award was Professor Catherine Wang for her contributions to BAM and its wider community particularly in research. This includes her sustained contribution to research on the role of knowledge and learning in strategic decision making, entrepreneurial endeavours and innovative outcomes.

John G. Burgoyne Memorial Prize for Management Learning

This new prize has been created in memory of Professor John Burgoyne, a Fellow of BAM who sadly passed away in 2023 and who left a significant academic legacy in advancing management learning. This award aims to celebrate those making a significant and sustained contribution to the field.

From a strong field of nominations, the judges unanimously agreed to award the inaugural John G Burgoyne Award for Management Learning to Professor Paul Hibbert, Professor of Management, University of St Andrews, UK, in recognition of his contribution to research and practice, which has shaped the field.

Paul has helped to develop the field of management learning through his own impactful research. He has held multiple senior editorial roles directly concerned with management learning and provided leadership and service to learned societies. He has made significant policy and practice contributions, through reports, guides and the design and delivery of professional development workshops. Lastly, Paul has developed a reflexive practice approach to management learning through taking theory into dialogue with his own practice, in senior university leadership roles
